The Origin and Development of E-ink Displays
The concept and origin of electronic paper often evoke the image of Kindle. However, in reality, Amazon's Kindle is not an isolated case. Numerous manufacturers, such as NOOK, iReader, Hisense, Xiaomi, and Sony, have also introduced electronic devices utilizing e-ink screen technology. The term "e-ink screen" has various alternative names, including "electronic paper" and "e-paper." In electronic paper technology, e-ink plays a pivotal role. This e-ink technology was developed by E-ink Corporation, founded by Professor Joseph Jacobson from MIT Media Lab in 1997. Later, in 2009, Taiwan's E Ink Holdings acquired E-ink and renamed it "E Ink Holding Incorporated," abbreviated as E ink. Therefore, the E ink we refer to today is essentially E Ink Holdings.

Technologically speaking, as early as the 1970s, Panasonic was the first to announce research and development in similar display technologies (namely electrophoretic display). Although a few other companies later joined this field, they ultimately abandoned development due to issues like technical stability and lifespan. It wasn't until E Ink revolutionized e-paper displays with microencapsulation technology that they successfully developed the e-paper technology still in use today, with its key innovation being the unique "electronic ink" technology. These microcapsules, comparable in diameter to a strand of hair, contain numerous positively and negatively charged particles. By applying an electric field, the particles are rearranged to achieve the display of black and white particles. E Ink's breakthrough made e-paper more suitable for flexible displays.
Certainly, beyond the currently popular "electrophoretic display technology," other electronic paper technologies such as electro-wetting display, cholesterol liquid crystal display, and electrofluidic display are also under development. Although their current market share is still small, they are worth anticipating.
The Practical Applications of Electronic Paper
In the practical application of electronic paper, market leadership and application scenarios are particularly evident. Whether it is Amazon Kindle, the leading enterprise in the global e-book field, or well-known domestic brands such as Palm Reading and Hisense, as well as Sony e-paper, their ink screens are all derived from the exquisite craftsmanship of E Ink Taiyuan Technology.
Even the newly launched color ink screen e-paper book palm reading C6 in the first half of this year is based on the exquisite craftsmanship of E ink Taiyuan Technology. E Ink Taiyuan Technology offers a variety of color ink screen technologies to meet different color rendering requirements. At present, its technology can display up to 4096 colors, but all of these technologies follow the common principle of "electrophoretic display technology".
The multifunctional application of ink screens is not limited to the research and production of electronic paper. Among the numerous supermarkets in the city, whether it's high-end brands like China Resources' Ole or non high-end brands like Alibaba's Hema Fresh, traditional paper price tags are gradually being replaced by ink screen price tags. These electronic labels look no different from paper labels, and even ordinary consumers find it difficult to detect the technological innovations behind them.
For supermarkets, using ink screen electronic labels is more cost-effective compared to paper labels in the long run. These electronic tags have extremely low power consumption, which is both environmentally friendly and energy-efficient. Through unified management, supermarkets no longer need to replace paper labels one by one, saving a lot of time and manpower. At the same time, the actual appearance of these electronic tags is not much different from ordinary paper tags, and a unified style also helps the store maintain its overall beauty.
Obviously, ink screens have unique advantages in displaying static content, especially suitable for displaying static advertisements. Bus stop signs and billboards both domestically and internationally have adopted large ink screens to alternately display static advertisements, which not only reduces advertising distribution costs but also significantly increases the number of displays. Compared to ordinary light-emitting screens, ink screens have lower energy consumption, no large-scale heating problems, and do not cause light pollution.
Future potential and challenges
Although electronic paper has not yet become mainstream in the market as a personal device (the market share of e-books is still relatively small), it is gradually integrating into people's lives as a shared "social resource" and quietly moving towards mainstream status. With the continuous decrease in the manufacturing cost of ink screens, we have reason to expect to see their presence in more scenarios in the future.
However, ink screens also face limitations and challenges. Although its appearance is close to real paper, its reaction speed is slow and not suitable for displaying dynamic images. In addition, when displaying static images on the panel, the ink screen does not consume electricity and only needs to consume a small amount of power when switching images. Its main shortcomings lie in refresh and ghosting issues. Due to the imaging principle limitations of ink screens, the refresh rate is significantly slower than that of regular screens.
Although ink screens may not be able to completely replace traditional light-emitting displays in the short term, they have shown significant advantages in specific fields such as static
advertising display and electronic reading. With the continuous advancement of technology, the refresh rate and display effect of ink screens are expected to be further improved, thereby expanding their application range. Therefore, we cannot rule out the possibility of ink screens entering the mainstream in the future.
